Purpose: Islamic and Western scholars have classified various sciences based on three ontological, methodological, and evaluative bases. However, due to the different views on sciences, they have based their classification schemes on various criteria and models. The aim of this study is to find the differences and similarities between the classifications of Western and Islamic sciences based on the aforementioned three bases.
Method: The present article is analytical and was conducted using the literature review method.
Findings: The ontological basis in the classification of sciences by Islamic and Western scholars has received more attention than methodological and evaluative bases. This is while both have advanced as a criterion and model for dividing sciences. The difference is that there are more patterns and criteria for dividing sciences among Muslim scholars, of course, noting that the library criterion has been more useful due to its simplicity and ease of use for storing and retrieving sciences.
Conclusion: By recognizing the differences between the foundations of patterns and criteria for classifying Western and Islamic scholars, we can speak of a kind of localization of classification knowledge based on the ontology of Muslim scholars and determine educational and research goals accordingly.
