Feasibility of Using Augmented Reality Technology in the National Library and Archives of Iran

Abstract

Purpose: The main purpose of this study was to assess the feasibility of using augmented reality technology in the National Library and Archives of Iran.
Method: This study was conducted using a mixed-methods approach with an exploratory strategy. First, through a review of the research literature, the main variables affecting the use of augmented reality technology were identified, including organizational policies, human resources, technical infrastructure, and financial resources. Subsequently, a semi-structured interview protocol was developed, and interviews were conducted with 12 experts in the field of augmented reality technology. In the quantitative phase, the attitudes of the staff and librarians of the National Library and Archives of Iran were assessed using a questionnaire developed based on the experts' opinions.
Findings: The data analysis showed that organizational policies at the National Library and Archives of Iran for the use of augmented reality technology were at a moderate level or below, with a mean score of 8.88. Overall, the status of human resources at the National Library and Archives of Iran was favorable for employing augmented reality technology in service provision, with a mean score of 13.10. According to the respondents, appropriate technical infrastructure for employing augmented reality technology was not available in the organization, as indicated by a mean score of 20.10. Furthermore, the National Library and Archives of Iran did not have a favorable financial and budgeting status for using augmented reality technology, with an overall mean score of 13.23.
Conclusion: Although it appears that the necessary conditions for using augmented reality technology do not exist in some respects at the National Library and Archives of Iran, this technology can be adopted with some revisions to the organization's plans. The organization's plans include the use of artificial intelligence, within which augmented reality technology can be incorporated. This technology and its applications can also be included in plans. The organization can use augmented reality technology to provide services such as training users and librarians, conducting virtual library tours, organizing virtual exhibitions, providing supplementary information about resources, guiding users and directing them to different sections of the organization, displaying three-dimensional museum objects, and providing access to rare resources and manuscripts.
