InfoCrystals and their Application in Information Retrieval

Abstract

Purpose: The objective of this research was to study the application of data visualization in general and the “info crystal” technique in particular, in information retrieval, visualization of weighted queries and visualization of vector spaces. This research also reviewed how these techniques help in better understanding the relationship between the high volumes of retrieved concepts.
Design/ Methodology/ Approach: This research reviewed the texts in the field of information retrieval and information visualization and studied the effect of information visualization, especially the “InfoCrystal” technique on analyzing search results.
Findings: Information visualization techniques benefit from the human visual capacity in recognizing patterns and structural relations of objects for improving retrieval systems. These techniques are applied in different sciences e.g. geology, geography and recently library and Information science (LIS). One of the information visualization techniques is the “InfoCrystal” technique which can portray the abstract information space and visualize all possible relationships between infinite concepts.
Research Value: This research can be useful for Iran’s LIS society due to the growing importance of information retrieval systems and the lack of published resources in the fields of information visualization, the “InfoCrystal” technique, and its applications in designing information retrieval systems.
