Abstract
Information and knowledge organization is one of the fundamental areas of librarianship and information dissemination and is considered one of the fundamental stages of information management. Despite the expansion of the use of artificial intelligence in organizational processes, today's achievements in this field are the product of the continuous efforts of people who have organized information resources and human knowledge throughout history. The pioneering generation of organization in Iran focused more than anything on developing basic tools for the organization process. Before the activities of this generation, there was no serious scientific attention to the topic of organization in Iran, nor were native and Persian tools available to specialists in this field. Figures such as Iraj Afshar with the authorship of "Books of Iran" and "Five Bibliographies of Iran", Hossein Bani-Adam with "Thematic Bibliography of Iran", Ali Akbar Jana with translations of the Dewey Classification, Dr. Houshang Ebrami with the translation of "Principles of Cataloging" by Margaret Mann, Ahmad Taheri Araqi, Dr. Abbas Hori with "A Small List of Persian Subject Headings", and Farangis Omid took fundamental steps. Among them, Pouri Soltani holds a special place, having established the foundations of organization in Iran by authoring "Persian Subject Headings" and "Library Dictionary", translating and adapting important international works, establishing the Tehran Book Processing Center (1969), compiling a guide to Iranian magazines, and organizing the national bibliography of Iran. Students and colleagues such as Zohreh Alavi, Kamran Fani, and Firozan Zohadi continued this path. The field of manuscript cataloging also has a central place in the history of information organization in Iran. These activities have not only preserved the scientific and cultural heritage of the predecessors but also provided a valuable infrastructure for contemporary research in the fields of manuscriptology, Iranology, and cultural studies.
Since the early 1980s, a new generation of researchers has turned to the field of organization. The main difference between this generation and its predecessors is their serious attention to new and global topics of organization, such as IFLA conceptual models (FRBR, FRAR, BIBFRAME, LRM) and the use of ontologies in information organization. It is expected that the new generation will expand research and educational activities with greater dynamism and effort and become the source of more innovations, developments, and impacts in this field. What is most important now is to highlight the position of organization and introduce its prominent and influential figures. It is clear that the Quarterly Journal of Library and Information Organization Studies has the mission to pay special attention to this area and provide a platform for the publication of related research and articles.
Future Strategies for Information Organization in Iran
Information organization in Iran today stands at a point where, on the one hand, it possesses the precious legacy of pioneers and practical experiences of the past half century, and on the other hand, it faces the challenges and opportunities of new technologies, especially artificial intelligence and global conceptual models. The future strategy must rely on a smart combination of the two: preserving and updating native and language-based tools (subject headings, thesauri, and expanded classifications) along with the gradual integration of conceptual models and international standards and new technologies.
It is now a source of joy that this field in Iran, by preserving the legacy of its pioneers and updating indigenous tools, is moving in step with global scientific trends, and by responsibly utilizing new technologies, is achieving semantic management and a link to knowledge; thus, establishing its position as one of the pillars of transformation in the country's knowledge system and an active player in the global information arena.
