Purpose: There have been different trends and methods for manuscript cataloging in Iran which can be divided into three types: 1. Traditional 2. Median 3. Modern. This study reviews the 22 volume catalog of the National Library of Iran according to the specifications of these three methods.
Design/ Methodology/ Approach: The research data were collected from a sample of 150 catalog cards and on the basis of a checklist which contained 23 criteria.
Findings: Median and modern methods of cataloging are applied in the 22 volumes of the manuscript catalog of the National Library of Iran: for the first 12 volumes the median method, for the 13th and 14th volumes a moderate method (between median and modern) and for the 15th to 22nd volumes, the modern method was applied. The 22-volume manuscript catalog was examined based on the checklist and the Kruskal-Wallis test proved a significant difference between catalogers’ styles of reflecting the different manuscript cataloging elements.
Conclusion: The catalogs prepared by the modern method have the greatest conformity with the checklist items. By applying a comparative study between the three methods, it was proved that the latter catalogs have a more consistent and clearer pattern and they are more relevant and balanced in representing codicological and bibliographical information.
