Bertrand Russell’s Mathematical Logic and Its Implications in Information Organization and Subject Headings

Abstract

Purpose: This study aims to investigate the application of Bertrand Russell’s mathematical logic in the logical formulation of information organization.
Approach:. This study, in respect of the collection of data is historical, in respect of its logic is analytic, and in respect of its purpose is applied research. The method that used in this research is qualitative content analysis
Results: In this research, a syntactic, semantic, ontological and logical framework have been introduced for classification and analysis of subject entries. The deficiency and weakness of natural language on comparison with logical language have been surveyed. The application of mathematical logic in the analysis of context and different linguistic expressions, such as proper name, classes, relations, properties, propositions and sentences are discussed.
Conclusions: As the mathematical language is analytic and relational and is nearer to the language of physical world, it is used for showing the syntactic, semantic, and ontological structure of subject entries. In order to improve the clarity and precision of concepts, neither of the entities allowed without intension and extension.
