The Subject Diversity and Books Borrowed in Public Library of National Library of Iran

Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to identify the subject diversity of books available in the public library of National Library and Archives of Iran (NLAI), also exploring the borrowing rate.
Methodology: Collection analysis and evaluating users.
Results: According to the results, over 50.35 percent of books are classified in Philosophy and Religion (B) and Language and Literature (P). The mean book borrow rate is 0.61 which is not quite a bit. 74.83 percent of books has never been borrowd and only 17.43 percent of active members have at least once borrowed a book. Borrowing is 1.34 per person among 51262 members. The availability of collection has been measured 96.11 percent. Ultimately, it revealed that there is a direct correlation between the number of books and the borrowing rate and an indirect correlation between the number of books and the mean borrowing rate. Also, there is a significant difference in the mean usage rate in different subject classes.
Conclusion: The library collection is not consistent with members' interests. Therefore, some changes seem to be necessary in choosing the resources, management, evaluation, weeding and overally the collection development of the library.
