Abstract

Purpose: The aim of this study was to identify the viewpoint of Shahrekord high school students about encouraging and inhibiting factors for free study, considering some demographic variables like gender, grade and school district.
Design/ Methodology/Approach: The research was descriptive and applied a post-hoc method. The sampling was done on the basis of Krejcie and Morgan's table by applying a multistage method of sampling. The data gathering instrument in this research was a questionnaire with the reliability coefficient of 0.755. The statistical population was chosen among high school students from first to third grade, located in five regions of Shahrekord (region 1, region 2, Laran, Saman and Ben).
Findings: Applying Chi-square test, univariate T test, independent T test, analysis of variance and Tukey follow-up showed that there was a significant difference between the extent of female and male students’ free study. Tukey follow-up results indicated that there was a significant difference between the viewpoint of female and male students in various areas and different school grades about encouraging factors such as family and mass media.
Conclusion: Studying the students’ view about factors inhibiting them from study indicates that the effect of boredom is more than average and the impact of lack of time, lack of access to books, escaping from study and the high price of books is at an average level. Results of the Tukey follow-up test on lack of access to books showed that there was a great average difference between second and third graders. There was also a significant difference in the field of escape from study between the average of first, second and third graders. Regarding the factor lack of time, there was a great difference between the Laran and Bon regions and there was no statistically significant difference in other cases. With regard to the high price of books there was a significant difference between the Laran and Bon regions.
