Information Ethics in the Digital Environment

Abstract

Purpose: The development of information and communication technology has caused many changes in the status of access to information. Aiming to familiarize users with the requirements and characteristics of the modern information society and informing them about its rules and ethical principles, we have tried to introduce the ethical principles and difficulties of the librarians' information society and to encourage information society users to observe them.
Design/Methodology/Approach: In this research, we have studied and analyzed the specialized literature, interviewed with librarians of research libraries in Tehran, and reviewed various available viewpoints and norms of the society.
Findings: Copyright, information security, Freedom of information, privacy, censorship, up-to-dateness of information, and the validity and accuracy of information are introduced as the indicators of information ethics.
Conclusion: Laws and regulations are considered as a part of information ethics that are effective in the digital environment. According to the data of the present research about the regulations and laws of information ethics in the digital environment, we may conclude that before using these regulations in the digital environment, they should be well understood in order to have higher accuracy and lower costs.
