Traditional and Web Citations in Humanities Open Access Journals: A Comparison

Abstract

Purpose: Citations from two traditional citations (Web of Science, Scopus) and two web citations (Google, Google scholar) are analyzed to determine whether which source is better for citation tracking in humanities.
Research method: Scientometric methodology was used. The population includes211 research articles from 21 open access journals in the humanities. Proportional sampling is applied.
Findings: Google Scholar citation is much higher than Web of Science open access journals. Overlaps found between WoS and Google Scholar.  Nearly half of WoS citations are available Google Scholar. The shared citations indicate that 1/4 of WoS citation is in Google. Language of the cited resources in Google scholar is beyond English language.
 Conclusion: Scholars, who want to use alternative tools to get a more comprehensive picture of the impact of an article, are recommended to use Google Scholar.
