Abstract

Traditionally knowledge organization is considered as key elements in library and information science. knowledge organization whether in the narrow sense (document description, indexing, and classification) or in the broader sense (social division of intellectual labor) need theoretical foundations and paradigms to use them to analyze issues and have the basis for judgment. Hjørland, as one of the most highly cited researchers in the field of knowledge organization,opened four epistemological position (empiricist, rationalist, historicist, pragmatic) for knowledge organization. This four position can be regarded as the cornerstone of the philosophy of knowledge organization. Which, in turn, they provide theoretical and philosophical basis for knowledge organization systems. Generally, each of these systems according to the purpose, and due to the audience expectations and using the existing technical infrastructure in their time, they facing new horizons break in organization knowledge. In this review article, library study method was used to collect data. Library resources and related databases such as Emerald, Science Direct, Google Scholar, ProQuest, ReseachGate, Magiran, Noormags, and SID were searched by two keywords “Birger Hjorland” and “Knowledge Organization” during 1990-2015.
