Abstract

Purpose- The purpose of this study is the identification of existing digital preservation strategies in order to guide organizational activities used to guarantee long-term access to digital materials.
Design/methodology/approach- This study was done based on a library review and an examination of literature associated with digital preservation. Digital preservation strategies were examined, and the key factors instrumental in planning the said strategies for long-term preservation in national libraries have been given here.
Findings- Different strategies are applied to different digital materials. In complex and functional software such as computer games, technology preservation and emulation are appropriate. On the other hand, in simple resources as well as cases in which there is sufficient knowledge regarding the format, transfer and packaging strategies seem suitable. When digital resources relocate, persistent locators are beneficial. Reliance on standards reduces the complexity and cost of maintaining long-term preservation strategies. Also, the development of digital archeology is suited to save information from outdated and broken media.
Conclusion- For a successful Digital Preservation, a mixture of different approaches that includes transfer, packaging persistent locators and reliance on standards must be considered. This means that one approach might include some aspects of other approaches.
