Views of university library staff and directors about deploying Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) in Isfahan University Libraries

Abstract

Purpose: Exploring views of librarians and library directors about the possibility of installing
Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) in the university libraries with regard to
circulation desk services, security, shelf reading, and inventory control, and management
purposes .
Design/Methodology/Approach: A questionnaire was used to collect data. Using stratified
sampling, views of 135 out of 168 librarians and directors of three University Libraries
in (University of Isfahan, University of Medical Sciences of Isfahan, and Isfahan University
of Technology) were sought.
Findings: Installing RFID improves the quality of services at the loan desk. It helps with
identification of unwanted materials, saves users’ time, and helps with shelf reading and
inventory control.
Conclusion: Deployment of RFID was considered more for circulation desk services, security
system, shelf reading, and library management.
