Investigating the Link between Science and Technology through Citation Analysis of Iranian Patent during 2009-2013

Abstract

Purpose: Analysis of knowledge flow through investigation of Iranian patents.
Methodology: Scientometric method and citation analysis has been employed. The Iranian patents were collected from United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) database and the subjects were selected based on International Patent Classification (IPC). The patents' citations were analyzed by the references to patents or other scientific resources.
Results: Only 43% of patents cited non-patent resources. Regarding all the citations, about 77.6% of them referred other patents and only 22.4% cited other resources. Also, the statistical tests' results show a significant difference between the number of citations to patents and to other resources, as well as a significant difference between selected subject fields.
Conclusion: Iranian patents are science-based rather than technology-based.
