Abstract

This research aimed to evaluate the status of international scientific journals. The study population was a collection of the publications of Journal Citation Reports (JCR) published by the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) in 2005 which is more than 6,088 journals. This paper explains the differences between the journals of the study population and journals of ISI. It then investigatespublishers, the status of scholarly papers and review articles, impression, range of the papers, impact factor and immediacy index of the journals assessed. The research showed that 30 percent of the journals of JCR belongs to the United States of America then follows England (21%), the Netherlands (9%) and Germany (7%). The impact factor of half of the journals is between 0 to 1 and 75% of the journals have an impact factor of 0 to 2. Immediacy index of 94% of the journals is between 0 to 1. The number of papers of the scholarly journals doesn’t follow a special standard. 3% of all the documents include review articles. English is the most frequently used language and.65% of the journals of JCR belong to 79 publishers
