An Analysis of the Codicological Information of the Manuscripts Available in the Digital Library of the National Library and Archives of Iran

Abstract

Purpose: This research studies the manuscripts available in the digital library of the National Library and Archives of Iran (NLAI) in terms of their codicological features, including date and place of transcription, type of paper and script.
Design/ Methodology/Approach: Content analysis was employed as the method for this study. The research population consisted of 3,853 manuscript records available on the website of the digital library of the NLAI.
Findings: A majority (71.22%) of the manuscripts are related to the 13th Hijri century (19th century). The transcription place of most (70.83%) of these manuscripts is Iran’s territory in that era. The most popular type of paper (72.59%) used for these manuscripts is European paper. Also the most commonly used type of script (64.31%) is Nasta’liq and the most infrequent type of script used in these manuscript is Latin (0.05%). Findings also show that the oldest manuscript in this collection belongs to the 5th Hijri century (11th century).
