Purpose: The purpose of this research is to analyze the notes written by readers on the margins of the books in a public library- as a vandalism activity.
Methodology/Approach: Qualitative approach is used. The population consists of books being held in Shahid Hashemi Nejad public library in Saveh. By purposive sampling, 140 notes were selected and analyzed using content analysis.
Results: According to the results, book notes content fall into 4 main categories of "emotion expression", "comments", "suggestions" and "requests". "Emotion expression" and "request" were the most and the least frequent categories respectively. Also, the analysis shows that the readers intended to inform future readers rather than cause damage by writing notes. In addition, their notes reflect a negative feeling toward life along with sorrow and despair (at least at the time of writing). Similarly, the note witers seemed to be disappointed about life. Also, the analysis indicates that note writers had experienced love failure and regret.
Conclusion: It is suggested that public libraries consider providing more inspirational works –such as biographies - in their collection development policy to promote delight and optimism in readers.
