Purpose: The objective of this research was to study the extent to which standards are observed in the designing of central library buildings at universities in Isfahan. . This is done based on the model established by the American Library Association.<br />Design/ Methodology/Approach: The six central library buildings of universities in Isfahan were surveyed using a checklist. Descriptive statistical indexes were employed to analyze the data collected.<br />Findings: In the central libraries of only two universities - Isfahan University of Technology and The University of Isfahan - more than 50% of the standards for designing library buildings were met. With regard to the extent to which library building standards are observed, Isfahan University of Technology is first level and Payame Noor University of Isfahan is at the bottom of the list.<br />Conclusion: On average, 44% of the design standards for library buildings are observed in designing the buildings for central libraries in Isfahan universities.

Purpose: The objective of this research was to study the application of data visualization in general and the “info crystal” technique in particular, in information retrieval, visualization of weighted queries and visualization of vector spaces. This research also reviewed how these techniques help in better understanding the relationship between the high volumes of retrieved concepts.<br />Design/ Methodology/ Approach: This research reviewed the texts in the field of information retrieval and information visualization and studied the effect of information visualization, especially the “InfoCrystal” technique on analyzing search results.<br />Findings: Information visualization techniques benefit from the human visual capacity in recognizing patterns and structural relations of objects for improving retrieval systems. These techniques are applied in different sciences e.g. geology, geography and recently library and Information science (LIS). One of the information visualization techniques is the “InfoCrystal” technique which can portray the abstract information space and visualize all possible relationships between infinite concepts.<br />Research Value: This research can be useful for Iran’s LIS society due to the growing importance of information retrieval systems and the lack of published resources in the fields of information visualization, the “InfoCrystal” technique, and its applications in designing information retrieval systems.

An Analysis of the Codicological Information of the Manuscripts Available in the Digital Library of the National Library and Archives of Iran

Purpose: This research studies the manuscripts available in the digital library of the National Library and Archives of Iran (NLAI) in terms of their codicological features, including date and place of transcription, type of paper and script.<br />Design/ Methodology/Approach: Content analysis was employed as the method for this study. The research population consisted of 3,853 manuscript records available on the website of the digital library of the NLAI.<br />Findings: A majority (71.22%) of the manuscripts are related to the 13th Hijri century (19th century). The transcription place of most (70.83%) of these manuscripts is Iran’s territory in that era. The most popular type of paper (72.59%) used for these manuscripts is European paper. Also the most commonly used type of script (64.31%) is Nasta’liq and the most infrequent type of script used in these manuscript is Latin (0.05%). Findings also show that the oldest manuscript in this collection belongs to the 5th Hijri century (11th century).

Purpose: The aim of this study was to identify the viewpoint of Shahrekord high school students about encouraging and inhibiting factors for free study, considering some demographic variables like gender, grade and school district.<br />Design/ Methodology/Approach: The research was descriptive and applied a post-hoc method. The sampling was done on the basis of Krejcie and Morgan's table by applying a multistage method of sampling. The data gathering instrument in this research was a questionnaire with the reliability coefficient of 0.755. The statistical population was chosen among high school students from first to third grade, located in five regions of Shahrekord (region 1, region 2, Laran, Saman and Ben).<br />Findings: Applying Chi-square test, univariate T test, independent T test, analysis of variance and Tukey follow-up showed that there was a significant difference between the extent of female and male students’ free study. Tukey follow-up results indicated that there was a significant difference between the viewpoint of female and male students in various areas and different school grades about encouraging factors such as family and mass media.<br />Conclusion: Studying the students’ view about factors inhibiting them from study indicates that the effect of boredom is more than average and the impact of lack of time, lack of access to books, escaping from study and the high price of books is at an average level. Results of the Tukey follow-up test on lack of access to books showed that there was a great average difference between second and third graders. There was also a significant difference in the field of escape from study between the average of first, second and third graders. Regarding the factor lack of time, there was a great difference between the Laran and Bon regions and there was no statistically significant difference in other cases. With regard to the high price of books there was a significant difference between the Laran and Bon regions.

Purpose: Policies applied by every institution or organization identify strategies for their activities and make the employees aware of the scope of their duties and powers. In each policy, there are some standards and elements which are affected by the activities, goals and duties of the related institutions or organizations. This study aimed to identify the present criteria and elements of policies in accessing the manuscript sections in Iran’s libraries and to analyze the perspectives of the creators of these policies.<br />Design/ Methodology/Approach: In this research, the method of qualitative content analysis is applied to analyze the policy of services and access to the manuscript section of in Iran’s libraries.<br />Findings: There are nine elements in manuscript services and access policies in Iran’s libraries. Each element contains different categories and subcategories. Having only four elements, the Central library of the University of Tehran had the lowest number of elements and criteria, while the National Library of Iran has all of the identified elements and criteria.<br />Conclusion: This study concluded that each element had different levels of importance in different policies. Based on the findings, two elements i.e. providing resources and services to clients, and the conditions and specifications of the clients were the most important and basic elements in determining the policies. These two elements are considered in all of the presently compiled policies.

One Hundred Occupations for Librarians: New Organizational Posts

Purpose: The present study aimed to review the effect of information and communication technologies (ICT) on the Library and Information Science (LIS) job market. This research introduced new LIS career opportunities available according to recruitment advertisements.<br />Design/ Methodology/Approach: This study had a qualitative approach and used content analysis methodology. In a purposive sampling, 100 recruitment advertisements for librarians were selected and analyzed. The result was a sample of job opportunities for librarians at universities and scientific centers in English-speaking countries presented on the internet.<br />Findings: The job opportunities reviewed in this study were divided into seven groups and some examples were presented for each group. These groups are: professional posts/ occupations traditionally common in librarianship (16 titles), innovative posts associated with new technologies (23 titles), educational posts (13 titles), research posts (8 titles), special posts in subject librarianship (20 titles), posts in special library services (14 titles) and posts related to special information resources (6 titles).<br />Conclusion: The development of new technologies has had a positive effect on the LIS job market and many new job opportunities have been created for LIS professionals. In addition, the range of the posts that librarians may occupy has become considerably larger. Furthermore, while new organizational posts have been introduced, the common and traditional jobs of librarians have not been excluded from the job market.

Manuscript Cataloging in the National Library of Iran: Trends and Methods

Purpose: There have been different trends and methods for manuscript cataloging in Iran which can be divided into three types: 1. Traditional 2. Median 3. Modern. This study reviews the 22 volume catalog of the National Library of Iran according to the specifications of these three methods.<br />Design/ Methodology/ Approach: The research data were collected from a sample of 150 catalog cards and on the basis of a checklist which contained 23 criteria.<br />Findings: Median and modern methods of cataloging are applied in the 22 volumes of the manuscript catalog of the National Library of Iran: for the first 12 volumes the median method, for the 13th and 14th volumes a moderate method (between median and modern) and for the 15th to 22nd volumes, the modern method was applied. The 22-volume manuscript catalog was examined based on the checklist and the Kruskal-Wallis test proved a significant difference between catalogers’ styles of reflecting the different manuscript cataloging elements.<br />Conclusion: The catalogs prepared by the modern method have the greatest conformity with the checklist items. By applying a comparative study between the three methods, it was proved that the latter catalogs have a more consistent and clearer pattern and they are more relevant and balanced in representing codicological and bibliographical information.

An Introduction to the Functional Requirements for Bibliographic

Purpose: The Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records (FRBR) model is a conceptual model for enriching bibliographic records. This research introduces FRBR and elaborates on its advantages and disadvantages.<br />Design/Methodology/Approach: In this paper, IFLA records and other literature on the FRBR model are reviewed.<br />Findings: “FRBR” is a model for creating the maximum possible links between bibliographic elements. This model provides an appropriate information retrieval instrument for users and prevents duplication in cataloguing documents.<br />Conclusion: The FRBR model must be noticed as an important phenomenon in organizing user-centered information; however, it should be only used in appropriate places.

A Comparison between Search Engines and Meta-search Engines in Retrieving Information Related to Physics

Purpose: The objective of this research was to compare search engines with meta-search engines in retrieving information related to physics and to identify the extent of their overlap.<br />Design/Methodology/Approach: The research population contains six search engines and six public meta-search engines which are introduced as the most commonly used search engines by the "searchenginewatch.com" website. Frequency distribution, percentage and averages are used for data analysis and Microsoft Excel is employed for drawing tables and graphs.<br />Findings: It was found that among different search engines, “Yahoo” retrieved the highest number of physics documents (40%) and the “AOL” search engine had the greatest information overlap with other search engines (39%). Among meta-search engines, the “CurryGuide” meta-search engine retrieved most of the physics information (77.1%). Also the “Info” meta-search engine had the greatest overlap with other meta-search engines (43.7%).<br />Conclusion: With regards to the degree of overlap, public metas-earch engines are preferable to public search engines.

Mapping the Scientific Outputs in the Field of Library and Information Science among Islamic Countries in the Web of Science Database from 1994 to 2009

Purpose: The aim of this research was to study the documents produced in the field of Library and Information Science (LIS) by Islamic Countries which are members of the Organization of the Islamic Conference, during 1994-2009.<br />Design/ Methodology/Approach: By applying the method of citation analysis, the best authors and publications in the field of LIS were identified and a historiographic map of the scientific outputs of Islamic countries was depicted.<br />Findings: The average annual growth rate of publications in Islamic countries during the years studied is calculated to be 13.78%. Furthermore, the annual growth of publications in each Islamic country is calculated using the exponential regression method; results show that according to R2 which shows the annual growth rate of the countries’ scientific outputs, the growth of Iran, Bangladesh, Turkey, UAE, Pakistan and Egypt is statistically significant during the 16 years studied (p<0.05). During this 16-year period, the highest rates of growth compared with other countries belong to Iran (33%), Bangladesh (28%) and Turkey (17%). The clusters formed on the historiographic map, which are on the basis of “LCS” and “GCS”, are depicted along with the best publications in this field.<br />Conclusion: With respect to the explosive growth of information, the growth of scientific outputs of the Islamic countries in the Web of Science database does not seem to be all it could be. Authorities of these countries are required to make a serious attempt in producing scientific publications and indexing them in valid international databases.
