Considering the major role of libraries in meeting the information needs of their users today, new models are suggested for designing libraries, among which digital libraries have a special place. Such libraries, having more developed capabilities for information management, have an outstanding position among other information resources. This research studied the viewpoints of managers and librarians of the libraries of Allameh Tabatabaei University about developing digital libraries. The research was carried out as a survey, questionnaires are used to collect information and SPSS utilized to analyze the data. Research findings show that the managers and librarians of the libraries of Allameh Tabatabaei University have a good understanding and awareness of digital libraries and a positive opinion about digitizing library resources. They believe in the necessity of such libraries despite the budgetary and facility constraints. Some measures have been taken in this regard, namely subscription to foreign journals through internet and preparing theses in the form of CDs. Furthermore, more than 50 percent of the managers and librarians believe that obstacles to the development of digital libraries include lack of awareness of managers, lack of specialist librarians, out-of-date knowledge of librarians, lack of fluency in foreign languages, lack of computer specialists, the improper position of libraries in administrative structures, lack of clear copyright laws, lack of required equipment, lack of financial facilities and lack of telecommunications infrastructures. The telecommunication facilities of the university are assessed to be at a medium level from the viewpoint of information technology managers.

In this research, we first studied the status of the seminary libraries in Khuzestan Province, in terms of staff, collections, services, building, equipment and organization of resources. Then we evaluated the satisfaction of users of the libraries studied. To study the status of the libraries and evaluate user-satisfaction, checklists and questionnaires were used respectively. In this research, 18 libraries were studied and the library-users were selected by chance among students of three different seminary levels. Studies indicated that none of the seminary libraries of Khuzestan Province employ experts in the field of Library and Information Science; due to this the index of “knowledge and expertise of staff” has the highest frequency of dissatisfaction (37.9 percent) after the index of “staff number”. Statistics reveal that resources preserved in seminary libraries are mainly printed resources and have been mostly donated to the libraries. Studies showed that among a total of 18 libraries studied, only 6 had audio-visual resources, which were also very limited. According to the statistics obtained, among the indicators relating to books existing in libraries, respondents were mostly (57 percent) discontent with the diversity of Persian books. With regard to organization of resources, studies showed that none of the seminary libraries of Khuzestan Provinces follow national and international standards and principles and this has caused 41.5 percent of the users to be dissatisfied with the classification of libraries and 40.9 percent to be unhappy with the catalogue of the libraries.

The present research aimed to study and compare the capabilities of the Anglo-American CatalogingRules (AACR) and the Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records (FRBR) model for fulfililng the aims and functions required by library catalogues and to determine the pros and cons of each model. In this research, which was carried out as a comparative survey, the two models are assessed through checklists developed by the researchers. The checklists were filled in using existing texts and documents and searching in the United States’ National Union Catalogue and WorldCat which were chosen as examples. Furthermore, the data obtained from the research checklist was analytically and comparatively analyzed. Research findings show that in terms of aims and functions of catalogues, the basis for description in bibliographic records, the structure of bibliographic records, the determination of functions of existing data elements in bibliographic records and the level and method of describing documents in bibliographic records, the Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records model is more complete than AACR and is able to meet the information needs of library catalogue users more effectively. Among the deficiencies of the Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records model in comparison with AACR the following may be mentioned: less international popularity, lack of instructing librarians and cataloguers, lack of familiarity of catalogue users with this model, special.software requirements and cataloguing costsZAHIR

Islam and the Holy Quran place a high value on studying, reading books and gaining knowledge. In Islam, the importance of reading books is so much that the major miracle of the great prophet of Islam (PBUH) was a book (the Holy Quran) and the first verses of this book which were received by the prophet (PBUH), commanded him to read and included words like “book”, “pen” and “science”.The main objective of this library research – carried out through content analysis of the Holy Quran, narrations and other existing texts – is to study the status, meaning and concept of “book” and “reading books” from the viewpoint of the Holy Quran, Islam, the prophet of Islam (PBUH) and the pure imams (PBUT). Furthermore, the role of books in guidance, salvation and scientific-cultural progress of human beings and civil society is discussed. The research findings show that both in the Quran and in the narratives and sayings of leading figures of Islam, great emphasis has been placed on the constructive role of books and reading books in the intellectual and social development of humankind. Statistical analysis of the content of the Holy Quran reveals that the following words have many repetitions: “ketab” (book) (255 times), “elm” (science) (582), “qalam” (pen) (2) and “eqra” (read) (3). Moreover, the Quran and Islamic narratives consider books and the reading of books as a means for preserving, organizing and transferring cultural and scientific resources for and to future generations and many times mention the spiritual and heavenly effects of studying and passing knowledge on to posterity. The Holy Quran attaches particular importance to science, knowledge and pondering the phenomena of the world and therefore attributes special excellence and credibility to scientists and ulama. We may conclude from this research that studying, book-reading and education are among the major duties emphasized by Islam, the Holy Quran and narrations and sayings of Islamic figures. Therefore it is necessary to establish required infrastructures, build libraries and information centers and promote studying through different methods.

This research analyses scientific publications of Islamic countries in the “Web of Science” databasedated between 1944 and 2008. In doing so, the extent to which Islamic countries have produced international scientific publications and the number of times they have been cited are studied. The population of this research project consists of 16 Islamic countries (of a total of 57 Islamic countries) whose publications in the Web of Science database were more than the average of scientific publications. Among a total of 429,643 documents published by Islamic countries in the Web of Science database from 1994 to 2008, the 16 studied countries contributed 369,303 documents (83.3%). In other words, Islamic countries contributed 2.7 percent of material in the Web of Science database between 1994 and 2008, and more than 2.4 percent of those documents were published by the 16 studied countries. Ananalysis of the data revealed that the average number of publications of Islamic countries had an increasing trend in the studied period with Iran having the highest amount of increase in its publications. A study of the scientific map of the top ten authors in the studied countries reveals that in the field of chemistry, Iranian authors were most cited among authors of Islamic countries, and at a global level, Lebanon was the most cited country in the field of immunology. According to the findings, universities and scientific and research centers of Islamic countries may establish scientific relations to learn from.the experiences of countries leading in different fields

After the development of the web environment, the display types of thesauri were affected by the abilities and features of this environment. This article makes an effort to review the display types of thesauri especially in the web environment and to study the capabilities and effects of this environment on previous types of display. It also briefly reviews some of the web-based thesauri. The findings of this research show that, although the web environment has brought about some changes in web-based thesauri in terms of accessibility, the use of different types of display without being worried about space limits, the ability to simultaneously see two or several display types and to see several levels of hierarchy; thesauri of the web environment still face challenges for which proper solutions must be found.
